Nexus 7 2012 Audio Popping/Clicking Under Load

I purchased this 2012 Nexus 7 recently second hand. Outwardly, it's in immaculate condition without a scratch on it. However it's been nothing but trouble. It had the slow charging issue, which I fixed. It was unusably slow on 5.1.1, but now that I've rolled it back to 4.4.4 it's reasonably responsive (not sure if that can really be considered a 'fix', but whatever). What I was hoping Kitkat would also fix, but it didn't, was the third issue: pops/clicks/split second interruptions in audio whenever the tablet is under any kind of load. For example, if I'm playing music it will be fine while the tablet is sitting otherwise idle, but the moment I start running things the audio will pop intermittently. Launching the MS Word app might result in 5-6 pops and then it will be fine again once the app has completed loading. Create a new document, pop, click, back to normal. Browsing chrome; constant frequent popping. Watching youtube I might get 1-2 pops every half hour (probably when a background process does something), but it's mostly OK.

I'm assuming this isn't normal Nexus 7 behavior. Any ideas what could be causing it?
