[Q] How do I troubleshoot a recovery that does not work?

After generating a recovery.img file in the CyanogenMod 12.1 source tree using my Lenovo S6000H device, the recovery successfully flashes, but the recovery does not boot, instead, it just stays at the Lenovo logo for a long time, and then boots in to system.

How can I troubleshoot this?
